Lark Hill Nursery School - Case StudyIntroductionWe are an outstanding maintained Nursery in Stockport who now offer
12 places for 2 year olds 78 places for 3 and 4 year olds. We had set up
a website we were proud of and wanted to move to being paper free if
we could. The ProblemTraditionally we had sent out a half termly newsletter but often found that
parents might lose it or forget to read it. As we had grown to having 100
families to communicate with we were keen to think about if we could make
sharing information a bit easier. We knew that some of our parents wanted
the detail on our website but others did not as they were busy or had difficulty
reading that amount of information. We also began to see that our families
may not always have access to the internet but felt comfortable with apps on their phones. We introduced a texting service when we had the first very snowy winter but we felt it had limitations and a very specific purpose. What We DidWe came across Jigsaw School Apps a couple of years ago and thought it would just fill in the gap for us in providing quick information about key events, term dates, quick snapshots of news and provide access to documents families might regularly want to look at such as the dinner menu. Darren was great in helping us choose how the app would look and using some of our branding he came up with a few suggestions for how it could look. Benefits and ResultsFor us the app has been so useful and our families tell us they love it. We’ve had to think about which information we put where and have highlighted the app at our initial home visits as a supportive way for our families to have an overview of what the Nursery does. It is easy to update and it is just deciding what type of information is the most useful to include on the app and which you might share on your website instead. The app is certainly complementary to our other forms of communication. A Dad who had just moved to this country from Somalia said that the app had helped his wife feel welcome and supported her to understand what the Nursery was offering as she could read about it in her home language. I knew then that we had made the right decision in choosing the app.
